A native of State College, Pennsylvania, I grew up in the area that Money magazine named "The Best Town In Pennsylvania". Dad was a professor so I likewise graduated from the great Penn State University in 1984 with Dean’s List honors in Business Administration and Speech Communications. Ironically, seven years later I was living at poverty level with 2 small children - - the result of divorce. I worked 3 part-time jobs where I had flexible hours so that I could be home with Nathan, 2 years and Amber, 7 years. Even so, we were forced to accept welfare assistance and often stood in food bank lines. Poverty and single-motherhood are a lethal combination - the fear of financial ruin just a breath away, the fear of my children being traumatized from the divorce, and the fear of loneliness tormented all of my days. Every night we would keep praying for God’s choice of a husband/father for our family and for freedom from the awful poverty.
Four years passed. One day I received a book in the mail about franchised businesses that could be worked from home. I had never ordered this book, so I took this as a sign from God. I set up a phone appointment with the author, a millionaire from Seattle Washington. He recommended three of the businesses to me, based on my educational and work background. Then I investigated the franchise laws for Pennsylvania and began the process of buying a franchised business.
Menu Master was started from my kitchen table in February, 1995. Within a year I was providing menus to over 35 restaurants. Within another year I had 17 employees working as advertising sales executives and graphic artists - all from the comfort of their own homes.
The phone calls began coming in shortly after the first five were hired. Sometimes I spent the entire first half of a Monday praying and counseling with an employee over a husband leaving, a parent dying, a child being taken away from them by the courts. Always there was the gentle suggestion of a personal relationship with God - but the listening ear was available no matter what they decided. Nine Menu Master employees prayed to receive Christ as Lord and Savior of their lives in the first two years and many more were counseled.
Meanwhile God was blessing me so much that total strangers would tell me, "It seems like whatever you touch turns to gold!". In my third year of business God gave me and my children the greatest ‘gold’ of all - Robert Sweeley, the Christian husband and father for whom we had prayed and waited so long. Like me, Robert was ‘sold-out to Christ’. He operated a successful home-repair business called "Prime Projects" but demanded from the day we met that work ended "no matter what" at 4:30 p.m. for what he considered the greatest part of life: family time! Together we started a weekly ministry called "DivorceCare" - healing through Christ for the victims of divorce.
Today Menu Master is the largest menu-advertising company in Pennsylvania, requiring that Bob has quit his business and join me in Menu Master. In our 14th year of business, we now operate out of a brand new 1200 square foot home office. Most recently the Lord brought us the biggest account yet with McDonalds Restaurants. God is continually bringing new people off the battlefield on board Menu Master - and taking the old friends back out. Robert and I agree - the secret to happiness on this earth is being part of the Master’s plan at work in mortal lives!
